The COVID-19 pandemic created major supply chain disruptions in testing supplies, especially for swabs. In response to these supply issues, Mawi DNA Technologies developed the 100% plastic, injection-molded BioWAND as an efficient alternative to standard oral swabs. The supply chain line for the BioWAND is reliable and stable to counteract the increasing demand for sample collection swabs. Due to the 100% plastic molded construction and USA-based manufacturing, supply chain issues are nonexistent.

The swab head is designed with two mechanisms for collecting oral samples. The outside profile of the swab head is designed to scrape the buccal cells; while the multiple hollow patterns are designed to confine and capture oral samples. All these are done with a single use of swab. Gentle and non-invasive swab-based sampling collection method. BioWAND is unique compared to typical swabs with fiber heads for cells absorbent. It’s made of sterilized Homo Polypropylene and provides longer shelf life.

Product Description

The BioWAND is a 100% medical grade plastic sample applicator designed for high efficiency oral sample collection and release capability. The BioWAND’s Sampling Applicator for buccal cell and saliva sample collection is 3” in length, with a unique head design positioned at the distal end. The swab head is designed with a channel separated with teeth that retains the collected saliva which can then be released into the transport media with a gentle rotation. The full release capacity functionality removes the need for the swab to be transported with the sample therefore making it easier to process downstream for manual and robotic liquid handling systems.

Intended Use

The BioWAND Sampling Applicator is intended for specimen collection of biological samples. It is a non-invasive swab-based sampling applicator and is intended to be used for sample collection from sample types including buccal cell and saliva sample collection. The BioWAND fully releases its contents into the sample transport media, swab can be transported with the sample if preferred. A fully concentrated liquid sample can then be quickly processed with robotic liquid handling systems and/or any laboratory workflow.

Indication for Use (from IFU)

The BioWAND Sampling Applicator is intended for specimen collection of biological samples. It is a non-invasive swab-based sampling applicator and is intended to be used for oral buccal cell sample collection. The BioWAND is designed for optimal sample collection and release capabilities and is compatible with many sample transport devices, making it ideal for multiple swab sample pooling in a single device. The BioWAND is ready for use and does not require any preparation for specimen collection.
